My corporate job allows me to have a flexible work-life balance schedule which I am very grateful for. Having this flexibility allows me to work from home whenever I need to. Today, for example, I am home because my husband needed our car for work. Working from home has its upsides and downsides. The upside is I am able to make appointments and do things around my house while working along side. A downside, however, is that I’m not as productive as I am in the office. Having been in my job for over a year now, here are a few tips that help me stay productive during the day.
Get Ready in the Morning
I personally find that keeping the usual routine of getting ready in the morning, helps me get ready for the day. Make sure that you still do the same tasks as you would in the office: getting that coffee, writing down that To-Do list – whatever it is that helps you boost your morning and get the day started.
Yes, you may not feel like having meetings when you’re working from the comfort of your home. But booking meetings ensures that your brain is alert and ready. I find that I am more productive when I have calls that I need to be in because with meetings there are usually follow ups – I tend to immediately start working on a follow up and continue to be productive from there on.
The benefits of being at home also means that you can take breaks whenever you need to. When I work from home, I make sure I take a break away from my office to eat lunch and watch a TV show from my living room.
Music or Ambiance in the Background
Do you listen to music while you work? If you have a specific playlist that you listen to at work to help you be productive, bring that to your home office. Your productivity will increase if it’s connected to something that helps your brain be productive.
If you’re one that can be productive with the sounds of ambiance, Spotify has an amazing white noise playlist that you can listen to. Spotify is also my number #1 recommended app for music! You can find a playlist for any mood that you’re feeling.
These tips help me get into a mood of productivity that I might slack on being in the comfort of my own home. What do you do to stay productive when working from home?
