How to: Stay fitness motivated

Now that we are 3 weeks into the New Year, we’ve all had time to make sure we’ve checked into our New Years resolutions. One of my top resolutions of the year was to get back in shape to my wedding body, in 6 months. Coming into 2017, I was full of motivation and hope to get myself back in shape! Almost 4 weeks in and I’m happy to say that I’m still staying with the goal, but only through a few motivational tips and tracking.

1. Mindset

This is huge. If you don’t have a mindset for change, it’s really hard to stay motivated. I start with weekly goals to keep myself motivated and in the right mindset. Looking ahead to long-term goals can get very overwhelming. A long term goal of getting back into shape in 6 months is my main goal, but breaking this goal into weekly chunks helps me with my everyday mindset. Every Monday morning, I come up with the goals I want to accomplish for the week which puts me in the zone for that week. They look a little something like this:

  • Gym workouts from Mon-Fri
  • 2 hot yoga classes (Tues and Thurs)
  • Take the stairs up at work every morning this week
  • No sugary treats from Mon-Fri

Come Friday, I feel pride and success for accomplishing what I had planned for the week and brings me one step closer to my ultimate fitness goal.

2. Accountability

Being accountable for my workouts is my biggest challenge. Before, I never made myself accountable to complete workouts. This made me super lazy and if I didn’t feel like going to the gym on a day, I simply wouldn’t. This year, my girlfriends and I created a fitness group on Whatsapp where we encourage each other to complete our workout for the day! We stay accountable by posting a photo or selfie after we’ve done our workout. We also share healthy recipe ideas and progress photos. It’s an amazing community of girls whom I trust and look to for motivation.

3. People

While this goes almost hand in hand with the Accountability portion, the close people in your lives can also help you in your fitness journey. With a supportive partner, you can let them be your voice of motivation. The girls in my Wellness Whatsapp group keep me motivated. If you have a friend or coworker who is also looking into a healthier lifestyle, partner with them on activities! There is always someone around you who is also looking for motivation for their own health goals and need a partner in hand to keep them on track!

For me, having a conversation with our families were important. For example, my in-laws love to feed us so I had to sit down with my mother-in-law and chat with her about the journey we are taking for the next few months. She is now fully supportive of our lifestyle and refuses to offer me sugary treats to help us in this journey!

4. Track your progress

This is one of the key elements that will help you stay on track! Make sure to take photos and measurements of your body before you begin your fitness journey. Use the above mentioned motivators to continue your journey, and a few weeks later, measure yourself again! Once you begin to see progress, this will only motivate you even stronger to keep going to reach that goal!

Since we also live in a world of technology, there are other ways to keep track of your fitness journey… through apps! I found some great ones online, check out PC Magazine’s 25 Best Fitness Apps for 2017 which includes availability for both Android and iOS.
